mixed berries and garter stitch

My crafty friend and fellow trader Theresa (she’s also included as a beneficiary in my will because anyone else would simply toss my long-accumulated mountain of fabrics, trims, beads and yarns in the rubbish) saw me knitting at the market. I need to have something mindless to knit (I’m still off the crochet) and the chunky tank top I had on the needles was perfect — and almost finished, just need to sew up the shoulders and sides then will model for you. She suggested I try what a friend of her’s did – make a shawl or scarf by casting on 2 stitches then increasing one stitch at the beginning of every row until your triangle is the size you want. I’m doing it in garter stitch.

and using 3.25mm needles and some very special hand-dyed “Mixed Berries” yarn sent as a gift from Lisa at Yarnchick last year. The garter stitch is perfect to show the different shades, and every row is different.

Once I’d got cracking and found my knitty sticks yesterday, I was too excited to look for my wool winder hence the loose drape over the back of the chair.  Yes yes, I know I should be working (or packing) but I’m getting such pleasure from the knitting that I keep thinking just one more row, okay okay, just three more….

In other news, plans for moving are going gaily ahead. I have ruthlessly pruned back the amount of furniture and tchotchkes I own, also sold fridge and microwave and anything else that will be duplicated on the ‘other side’. [Prince] Philip has a piano and crystal chandeliers that need special care in moving, but I’m just a happy commoner so my stuff is getting bunged into old fruit crates and supermarket boxes. My movers are called Two Men and a Truck. We are counting the days and have the champagne all lined up. Now, just to stop knitting….

    What are ‘tchotchkes’? I’m intrigued.
I also have people who I would bequeath craft things too!

Tchotchkes = yiddish word for bits and pieces, ornaments, trinkets, etc. My ex-husband used the word to refer to anything of mine that he considered to be junk ;) It’s a brilliant word!!!

I love the colours in that yarn – it is going to be a beautiful shawl! And good luck with the move – always stressful so keep knitting for your sanity!

It will, and I’m going to be selfish and keep it for myself. I received a handknitted wool shawl from Kathryn for my second last birthday, it’s amazing to wear it in the winter at night – I know I’ll also get good use from this one.

I don’t envy anyone who has a move ahead of them but knitting with that beautiful yarn surely will make it go easier. I know the word “Tchotchkes” but never knew how to spell it. Oh those ex’s. Mine was a pack rat and I found out it’s contagious. ;) Oh well. I’m having fun with it all. Keeping my fingers crossed the move goes well.

Gorgeous colours. How big will it get with one skein? Or do you have more? Or will you add other yarn if it’s not enough? Do you have plans or are you winging it?? You say it “choch -kuh” right??…. Mrs Questions strikes again!!!!!!

I don’t know how big it’s going to get – just going to knit until the wool runs out. Lisa sent me one skein, I didn’t weigh it but it’s quite big. Sorry, vague, I know. I have no plans. Story of my life….

What a wonderful word, my husband calls my things nosegays, which is daft because he didn’t really know what a nosegay was, and of course it’s not what he meant at all. The garter stitch shawl is very pretty and sometimes garter stitch is just the ticket. Good luck with the move.

I totally understand about the lure of knitting over packing for the move – I’m feeling the same lure with my quilting and I move in 3 weeks (closing on my house in 5 days now….lol). =) I love the colors of the yarn you are using for the shawl is wonderful. Good luck with the move.

Lol, I know it’s time to put away the quilting, well almost. I close on the 21st but don’t actually move until the 9th of June. And my quilting stuff is most of what I have left to get ready for the move. I’ll actually start moving it over Labor Day weekend.

Just mainly your quilting stuff to pack? Then you are WAY ahead of me, pal. I’m so bad that I have boxes from my last move (2 years ago) that are still unopened. Guess they’ll save me time now…. ;)
Good luck with your own move. Here’s to being on The Other Side.

Hi Jill! I’m glad that I’m not the only one who procrastinates when it comes to actually doing the things that I need to do. :) By the way, I love how the knitted shawl is turning out. I knitted one like that with scrappy bits of furry, fuzzy, silky, and all kinds of my scrap yarns. That was many years ago. Good luck with the move. Love and Hugs, Tamara

What pretty yarn, it’ll look so lovely as a shawl :) I’m the same every time I’ve moved house – there was an awful lot of shoving things randomly into boxes on the day of the move itself!
