ScrapHappy August 2021

Time for something completely useless…

On a recent scavenge through the garage on the search for an 18cm beige metal zip, I came across this little plywood bird at the bottom of one of many boxes. Presumably I’d bought it years ago when I had mosaic on the brain but at some point had decorated one side with pale blue and floral fabric. Glued on. A bit of gold paint. A dot for an eye. Other side blank. No idea what the plan was. Most likely no plan. Still no plan, but I decided to quickly do something with the blank side so I could use it for this month’s ScrapHappy.

Clearly Bird was calling out for some Jekyll and Hyde treatment. I stuck on a scrap of metallic black fabric, some sequins that were in a box donated by a friend (getting rid of her unwanted craft supplies), and 3 snippets of narrow silver ribbon. I strung some beads on a bit of transparent sewing thread and Bird now hangs on a cuphook above my desk as a permanent reminder Not To Buy Anything Unless I Have A Clear Purpose In Mind.

And that, my friends, is my contribution for this month.

* ScrapHappy is open to anyone using up scraps of anything – no new materials. It can be a quilt block, pincushion, bag or hat, socks or a sculpture. Anything made of scraps is eligible. It is hosted by Kate and Gun. Email Kate at Tall Tales from Chiconia at the address on her Contact Me page, or leave a comment on her ScrapHappy Post. You can also contact Gun via her blog to join.

PS. I found 172 zips, none of them the right colour or length.

ScrapHappy May 2021

This is going to be a very pathetic ScrapHappy contribution this month, but something’s better than nothing, right?
Since lockdown last year, I have been growing out my fringe. It’s now long enough to be an entirely ex-fringe, but the shorter bits at the side irritate me when I’m typing or sewing. I clip the side back with a cheap metal clip, as you see below, which originally had some genuine fake emeralds stuck on top.

When the biggest emerald fell off the other day, I saw an opportunity to use up something scrappy – now you see the “new” clip with a masterful arrangement of bronze sequins stuck on with a bit of craft glue. The sequins are still on the string so they kind of formed a wiggly worm shape.

The pic of me below wearing the clip this morning is the best it’s going to get today – I am in a Very Bad Mood and you do not need to see my face properly! You will notice that my left hand is bandaged, and I have just had a phone call from the orthopaedic surgeon to say that the x-rays confirm a broken hand.

It will have to stay like this for the weekend because Neil is in theatre until 10 tonight, so he will put my hand in a cast on Monday. No driving, no sewing, no gardening or pottering with my indoor plants for the next 8 weeks. Grrrrrrr. This is what happens when you trip over the corner of a suitcase sticking out from under the bed and land with your hand squished up underneath you. My right knee is also rather swollen and a lovely shade of purple, but I can live with that!

In the meantime, I hope you all have a great weekend, whether it’s spring or autumn in your part of the world.

Putting the sparkle back

Anne was asked by one of her colleagues to copy a crocheted sequinny bag that she loved but was old and falling to bits. This is what she came up with:

So, she brings it round to show me and asks tentatively, “Do you think she’ll like it?” My jaw was still on the ground at the gorgeous-ness of this bag, but I quickly snapped it back up and said, “No, I think she’ll hate it. You’d better give it to me instead.”

To be continued….
